How safe is it to travel to India with a child?

For parents who have never visited India, they can find it a little bit overwhelming for their children. This perception will change as you experience all the beauty and luxury that India has to offer. 

India is a relatively safe and family-friendly country. The crime rates are quite low and security is always assured. However, here are some safety precautions to follow if you want to travel with your children:

1. Be conscious of traffic: 

The traffic situation in India can be chaotic sometimes and you may discover that using the pavements is not enough. Pushchairs are difficult to use and many parents avoid them completely.  

2. Pack everything you need:

Always be prepared before traveling with your children. Take extra formula, diapers, napkins, medications, and any other item you will need. You shouldn’t count on finding them when you get to India to avoid being frustrated and angry.

3. Enjoy the hospitality but be careful: 

India is filled with hospitable and interesting people. You’ll be amazed at how many strangers will want to befriend your family. Some will even ask to take pictures with you.

However, if you ever feel uncomfortable with the attention, express yourself and be firm. That kind of hospitality is normal in India but foreigners may find it uncomfortable and that’s alright. Your comfort and safety are more important.

4. Don’t buy food and water on the streets

This is the best way to avoid food contamination. Always drink bottled water and do not eat raw fish and meat. It’s better to buy whole fruits and vegetables that you can peel by yourself.
