Is It Safe For A US Citizen To Visit India?

Generally, the U.S. government has warned its citizens against traveling to India. This is as a result of the escalating violence in India. There have been reports of fighting and violence at the Indian-Pakistan border. There is also an alarming increase in sexual violence in the country. The U.S. government has warned female citizens against the rising issue.

Kashmir is a border region between the two countries (India and Pakistan). It is home to decades of bitter rivalry. The rivalry began on the 16th of February as a result of a terrorist attack. The attack claimed the lives of 40 Indian security officials.

Since the first attack, a series of fighting, bombings, and Air battles have been a norm in that area. Airplanes have been often shot down. This caused Pakistan to temporarily close its airspace.

Warnings from the U.S. Government to its citizens Traveling to India

The U.S. government has advised travelers to be cautious towards terrorism and crime. The state department also advised its citizens to stay as far as 10km away from dispute areas. The government warned its citizens against entering the Kashmir area.

The state department in a statement warned that terrorists are likely to attack tourists’ locations. Shopping malls, markets, and transport hubs are not safe from these unexpected terrorist attacks.

The U.S. State Department has warned its citizens about the Maoist extremist groups. They are present in the Eastern and Central India. The government has warned its citizens to be cautious of the rising ethnic insurgency. This insurgency is rampant in the Northeast of India. Rape happens to be a fast-growing crime across India. India, having the largest democracy in the world is plagued with numerous cases of rape.

The State Department warns its citizens to be careful at tourist sites. Sexual assault and violence are common in many tourist locations and sites. The U.S. government has advised citizens not to travel alone. This advice was directed to female citizens who wish to travel to India. Women are advised to travel with a companion.

Across the Pakistan border, the U.S. government has urged citizens to reconsider traveling to India. This recommendation has not been revised to reflect the sudden fighting in India.

These warnings were put in place before the recent attack in Kashmir. The recent attack in Kashmir was carried out by a group of unknown terrorists.

Despite the warnings above, some people may still desire to visit India. However, below is a list of places you should not visit in India.

Places You Shouldn’t Visit In India

 1) India-Pakistan Border

There is a strong military presence on each side of the India-Pakistan border. The state of Punjab has the only official crossing point in the India-Pakistan border. The crossing point is located between Wagah in Pakistan and Atari in India.

2) Northeastern States

A large number of violent incidents by ethnic groups are common in this area. Some of the incidents include bombings of markets, rail lines, and trains. Commercial vehicles are often used for bombing activities as well.

The U.S. government has stopped its employees from visiting the Northeastern states. The Northeastern states include Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Pradeep, and Arunachal, Assam. U.S. employees must get authorization from the Kolkata consulate to visit the states.

3) East and Central India

East and Central India is home to the Maoist extremist group. These extremist groups are often called the Naxalites. These Naxalites have carried out various terrorist attacks on government officials. Paramilitary forces and the police force are also victims of the attack.

These extremists are common in a large area of East and Central India. They roam wide from North of Telangana to the East of Maharashtra. They are also present in the local parts of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

The western part of West Bengal is also home to these extremist groups. Borders of Orishas, Bihar, and Pradesh are not safe from this terrorist group. The unpredictable nature of the terrorist attack has caused the U.S. to put certain sanctions on government travelers. Government workers traveling to states with Maoist terrorist activities require special authorization. The authorization can only be given by the U.S consulate in that area.
